Millennial Parents: Raising Bilingual Kids Without Pressure
Adults with immigrant parents and millennial parents raising bilingual kids: Vietnamese language learning, heritage culture, boundary setting, and emotional regulation without forcing it or losing yourself.
What if learning Vietnamese (or any language, or doing anything as a parent) didn’t have to come with pressure, guilt, or feeling like you’re failing your kid?
In this episode of Empowered with Immigrant Parents, I’m joined by Sophie Tran, founder of Mommy and Me Vietnamese (a bilingual educational Youtube channel and yes, the songs will get stuck in your head ).
We talk about the emotional layers underneath “passing down culture” for millennial parents and adults with immigrant parents. Because it’s not just language. It’s identity, belonging, healing, and the very real reality of motherhood, time, and unrealistic expectations.
In This Conversation, We Get Into:
How to teach Vietnamese in a way that feels fun, gentle, and consistent
What happens when culture is tied to shame, criticism, or survival mode
Why many of us grew up with only “happy” and “sad” (and how that impacts emotional health)
Boundaries in immigrant families, family roles, and staying connected without abandoning yourself
How we can separate our identity from how our children do

More about Sophie Tran:
Sophie Tran is the founder of Mommy & Me Vietnamese, a bilingual children’s YouTube channel that has reached over 350k subscribers in the last 2 years. Her love of educational programming started since she was a child, helping out her immigrant parents with their own globally known Vietnamese children’s music video production company The He Tre. Aside from content creation, Tran is a Vietnamese community consultant for First 5 Orange County which helps families get access to resources to help children develop and hit mile stones in their foundational first 5 years of life. Beyond all that, Tran is a wife of a corny dad joke teller and a mother to 2 children: a sassy, silly extroverted 4 year old girl & a clingy, cuddly, chunky 9month old boy.
